it's what we do
I was thirteen years old. I remember when my country celebrated its bicentennial, it’s two hundredth anniversary.
Today, right now, I am sixty-three years old. Today my country celebrates (in many different ways, us with hot dogs and potato salad and ice cream), today C and I and our boys (dogs) celebrate our country’s two hundred and fiftieth anniversary.
I searched and it turns out; there is a word for a two hundred and fiftieth anniversary. And now I know why it’s NOT being tossed around, why I have never heard this word used for a big, big anniversary celebration.
Happy Semiquincentennial.
It doesn’t exactly roll off the tongue with a big bite of hot dog and some potato salad and ice cream in one’s mouth. “Happsy Semiquincentennial.” (I think I just spit out my hotdog.)
But wait, there’s another way to say it. Happy 250.
Happy Quarter Millennium.

And because I was born to be “a planner”, for better or worse, I tend to look towards the future and often think I see a better tomorrow than this today.
What is and then extrapolate that out to a - what could be?
I’m thinking about another fifty, a plus fifty = 2076.
A me at one hundred and thirteen? Yeah, I don’t think so.
I mean - never say never, but I really wouldn’t bet on it. (A me at one - one - three. Not even sure I’d want that. I’m pretty sure that I would not want that.)
But still, I like to wonder…
What will “we”, if there is still one (if we still are one), and I sure hope that there is (and that we are).
What will my country look like, plus another fifty = USA, 2076?
One bet I would make, I’d bet a lot on this one -
I bet “we”, USA 2076 will look a lot different than us(A), now = 2026.
